My Understanding to White space

Just by looking at the words "White Space", the first image that appears in my mind is a white bag, it makes me curious and wondering  about what should, or will appear this a white space. White stands for clean, innocence, purity and cleanliness, and often used set off other colours, such as in the galleries, and museums. As far as I believed, the use of white space is considered to be an effective means of creating a “pure” space, a clean easiness atmosphere, which in this space we won't get easily distracted. In some other point it could be a rise up of art movement, before the movement of modernism, the works are often displayed in ornate, gilded rooms, with deep colours wallpapers to make it suit the style of the art works, which most galleries that present the art works that was produced in old centuries still keeps the concept, and there isn't a problem with it, as all the frames are made mostly more elegant and also with classical contemporary frames as well, which now into 21st century, the rise of modernism has changed the way of presenting the art as using white.

White space also reminds me of Minimalism, which stands for simple design style, with a sense of simplicity and neatness, hence seeking elegance in simplicity.  According to the principle of reducing, most art with the concept of minimalism are often represented  in simple lines, colours and geometric shapes, which did give people a great visual impact and intuitive feeling. The colour of white is often used in minimalism as well, as white it self could represent the minimalism.

In graphic communication design, white space is often used as the background, the gaps between the words and the columns, the negative space in the poster or the page, and this has referred to 'Micro" and 'Marco' white space. white space helps in placing the focus on some elements it is used by designers to create contrast, as to separate it from the main group, which could better present the main target on the page, White space can also contribute or present a certain atmosphere and mood, used to covey different meaning in any ads and posters, as it could give people a premium luxury look.

White space artist

Lucio Fontana (19 February 1899 – 7 September 1968)

Lucio Fontana was a artist who' work was famous known of his art works that's slicing through the canvas ' CONCETTO SPAZIALE, ATTESE'. The reason that why I am interested in these work is basically because earlier in my life I saw one of the piece and I was really confused that why is the work selling for such a hight price, as I presume everyone in the gallery has the ability to create one of these piece by themselves, but then looking back again I realised how many artist was inspired or changed the way of creating the art just by looking at this one slice on the canvas. From my understanding, the greatest revelation that Lucio brings to the public and all the artist is really jumping out from the fixed thinking, to break the idea of canvas are used for paintings, as Lucio deemed it is a piece of sculpture. Linking to the white space, Lucio's work is a representation of minimalist, which I regard it as the use of space and simplicity.

Manifestos

The artists’ manifesto is a “document of an ideology, crafted to convince and convert” (Mary Ann Caws, Manifesto: a Century of isms).  A review of each manifesto is accompanied by historical context, images of relevant artwork, and inspiration for contemporary applications of the ideas within.

Dogma rules, Brian Eno

  1. Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
  2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot.)
  3. The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted.
  4. The film must be in color. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera.)
  5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.
  6. The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
  7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)
  8. Genre movies are not acceptable.
  9. The film format must be Academy 35 mm.
  10. The director must not be credited.

The rules above have been listed as Dogma rules, which in the in 1995  Lars von trier and Dogma rules has listed the concept of making a 'purify movie', which shooting the films back into the most original way, as without any after effects, without using technology, without using extra machines, every shoot and scenes are produced purely by hand.

"Discipline is the answer… we must put our films into uniform because the individual film will be decadent by definition!”

At that time many people are fascinated by the after-effects that Hollywood was producing, and what dogma 95 pursuer is the movie strategies, the movie original itself, without any fancy effect and movement, but just making the films as close as to the reality. The main impression Dogma 95 has presented to the most audiences is the resistance to the overuse of technology and contemporary technical films represented by Hollywood films. Hence I thought other than the concept of confrontation to the technology, contemporary films, the film presents its own understanding and interpretation of nature art/film. In another way reminding people to be aware of 'over-packaged' movies, rebel against the increasingly rigid film ideology traditions, and focus more on the movie itself.

Chiharu Shiota is a Japanese inhalation artist, with a great creation of using space to communicate. The first time seeing her work is the online exhibition 'Sleeping is like death' created at the 2002 Lucerne Art Museum in Switzerland, it is a recording of the exhibition with series of photos inside the galleries, it caught my attention straight away as 24 women slept quietly on a single white bed. The whole series of photos gives me a sense of quietness and peace, but more about the science of death and horror. Besides the women sleeping on the beds, the space was intricate with black lines, they cross and wrap and connect the beds together, leaving the whole room with uneasiness and even fear. In this art piece, the color white is used as the spotlight of the whole space, as giving the contrast to the black strings.

Dada manifesto-Raoul Hausmann

Raoul Hausmann's work really gives me a visual impact, his photomontage and collage developed into two of Dada’s most effective tools of artistic communication. The combination of series of photos, the composition, the filter and text seemed to capture the jolts of modern reality.

“What is important is that our optical awareness rids itself of classical notions of beauty and opens itself more and more to the beauty of the instant,” Raoul Hausmann

Angela Glajcar

Angela Glajcar used a art media into her creation of art, by stringing hundreds of paper sheets together to create a cavernous works often lit from their core. From Angela's work I can feel the same concept from Lucio's, it is braking the usual way of art creation, and they've seen it more as a art piece itself instead of a media using to create art. From both of there work it also lights up my curiosity, of seeking to find out what is inside Lucio's canvas and so as, what is on the other side of Angela's paper cave. As everything was well placed, hanging up in the ceiling, it is something like the pathway to the heaven, the pureness and the clean, each paper is more like a cloud instead of just a paper. The light is shinning from the other end of the cave, which has more emphasised my imagination of the 'pathway to the heaven', as at the other end of the 'pathway' is shinning with the golden light.
