Quote
"THE MADNESS OF TV IS THE MADNESS OF HUMAN LIFE"
My Understanding of the quote
The world we lived in today was very well developed, different technologies, IT products, computer programs and AI etc. Out all of this the one that is most commonly used and with a strong history background and interaction to our daily life is the television, different movies, programs and many different acts. Based on this it is very obvious that these are for entreatment, and or to attract people's attention on certain things. From my perspective, shows that often with some curiosity, or violence, sex, can often catches more attention from the audience, personally I feel the same, the reason I assume is, madness is something that makes people uncomfortable, or even feel the pain and feeling alive. the All these element is something we remember the longest about, and I feel as a grown up, from many shows, movies or news.
"The madness of TV is the madness of human life."
Definition from me: TV is the reflection of human life, or, what was acted/shown on the tv was inspired by human life.
Process
The final idea we decided is to make a TV that has mirror replacing the screen as our item for interactions. To do that we've thought about a lot ways to make it safe and stable, as I've studied Dedign and technology as one of my A-level subjects before my partner and me thought about to make it out from MDF wood, as it is cheap easy and stable. However on the day we were going to make a process in 3D workshops we were rejected as there is a tour for students from other classes. As there is not much time left, we came up with another idea which is making out of form board.
Materials List
- Form boards x 12 A2 size (we put 3 boards together to bake it stable)
- A piece of mirror 300mm x 300mm
- Kitchen Foil paper (Waterproof and nice appearance)
Items for people to make interacts
- Eggs x 18
- Cups of pigment x 14
- Skittles x 2 packs
- Lollies x 2packs
- Flowers x 4
- Mask x 1
Process of Making
We've used a lot of different lamination items just to make it super stable, the foil paper works very well with the double sided tape, and super glue
Interaction test
Based on our idea my partner and me wondered what does MADNESS means, for me it means something that is crazy, strong and emotional, however as we are all independent person, so we will all have independent thought and feelings about it. We decided to simply ask people around the campus to write down what do they thing MAD is, or by doing what/ what thing could makes them angry. The result of it is quit surprising, 1/3 students wrote things thats happening very often in our daily life, such as wifi not working, fire alarms, swimming etc. The result did influence us to make a change of our original plan of playing very strong sexual, violence clips and changed our way as to make people express their madness through looking at themselves in the TV.
Group Tutorial 5/11/2019
Throughout Group tutorial we explained a few ideas to tutor Anna, and the feedback we got is we should be mad with our works, which could influence and interact others to come and participate, however we do think this have a few problems:
1. The location has to be somewhere that most people is willing to be brave enough to do something mad
2. The Location will need to be somewhere that is not interrupting others
3. The pack up after the mess was made
4. The transportation of the props.
Based on the following, Manting and I has decided to either do it at KC campus or at our own campus/Archway station some where that is near the art block, which makes it easier to move away and packing up, to makesurea we can quick and efficiently pack up the mess we made, the other tutorial group suggested we can put a large piece of paper, which we could wrap all mess up, as also giving the work a clear nice background.
Contextual Practice 6/11/19
1. Throughout today's presentation, what I've seen is a different range of designers with a nice work of interactions. The interactions are divided into four different kinds, action, communication occur as two or more objects, communication among certain groups, communication between two or more people talking to each other and human machine interaction. One of the artist who took my attention is Dunne and Raby, there work of 'Not here, Not Now'-2014. The reason is very simple, from a visual communication point of view, it Is very simple, simple shapes, lines, forms combined together with a skin red colour, which links my thought to some part of organs of human body. After the research, it is very new and fresh to see which is presented as a illustrated version, I could hardly see how this would make much interactions, however they've made it and it is very meaning as it is micro kindoms , each of the section has presented a different political situation and a challenge of future interphases.
2. From all four kinds of interactions that I have mentioned above, I assume our project will be a Communication between groups, as we would like to invite strangers who were walking pass the street. It is my first time of trying to do a actual interaction project, and I did felt nervous and confused about it as I have no idea how it will work. Based on my confusion I did went to some galleries and did research about how to make interactions, I realised that it is a silence communication between us as an artist and people who were participating in our creations of art, I personally think it is not necessary to make them to have some feedback or physically taking something away, but it is more about the feelings, of how they felt as being on of the characters to complete this piece of art.
3. The visualisation and pitch task today was also a great experience for both of me and my partner, we were both not the student who is so confident to speak about our ideas and stating in-front of such a big class. However I did see how much it helped, from a experience way, we've got and idea of controlling the time, the volume of speaking, the body language as we see the bad habits of keep on moving towards the side but also the great use of hand and face expressions. Moreover the most helpful part which did also helped us to changed and further developed or idea is when we heard about the idea of the group who got the same text as us, their group also has a great idea, but from a more performing art way, (and noticing that they also found it is hard to make a interaction based on the quote) Based on there pitch we start to considered if we need to change or add any human element during the interaction or in the outcome, as to show the word of 'HUMAN' in the quote.
Feedback from the crit/ Self reflection
In order of presenting our outcome and having a crit in our group, there is some useful and critical feedback that we are pleased to hear. First of all my partner and me did a self reflect on what we did good of and what mistake we made, and future improvements. Firstly we shout the outcome which is the video was very successful, although we've each made our own version of it but it is better to see how there is such a difference between our way of working and style, we could also learn from each other's video as well. The interaction was very successful as people are willing to participate, however the effect we want the audience to feel is not quit on the right track, they did express their madness as we've thought of however some of them, instead of a mad, aggressive mood, they've all been very exited and satisfied after the participating. Another mistake is when we carrying the mirror around to find a good sized form board for it it accidentally dropped on the ground and smashed a bit, but it did not effect our plan, which we've also felt it actually matches our quote very well so we used it, but! due to this we have changed our place of doing it from kings cross to Archway campus in order of safety issues.(As I've accidentally cut my finger) The last thing that we did not expected was, the idea of the project is to see ourselves in the mirror as just like some characters who lives in the TV, however after a while the mirror was covered with eggs, pigment, lollies etc, which has made it hard to see.
Hearing from other groups, they all think we had a nice documentary of the outcome and were successfully made interact with strangers, however the idea could be more playful if we could be even more mad at it, as if hit it with hammer etc.

Droog Design (Do hit chair)
The concept is to grab the hammer and hit your own chair. After a few minutes or hours of hard work, you become the co-designer of Do hit. In some ways, I see the madness in the work, the work was made during the process of breaking.

Nam June Paik
Nam Jun Paik's work was also shown at Tate galleries, his work was very powerful as combining his beliefs and technology together to create his works, the one that I remember the most with interaction is the roller that used to "draw" on each of the lines, based on the power, speed and the direction of which each person chose, it will give a different sounds, in this way he used sounds to attract more people to be involved and challenged the strangers to see if they could create some unique sounds.
For our quote we've also got something that was related to TV, so looking at Nam June's show was super helpful, as seen how he has used TV to create such a different artwork, as projector, a mirror, as a container of a candle, even combining it with the nature (fire and plants).
CILDO MEIRELES
(Babel) as a ‘tower of incomprehension’. Comprising hundreds of radios, each tuned to a different station, the sculpture relates to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, a tower tall enough to reach the heavens. (https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern/display/media-networks/cildo-meireles)
From Clido's work, what inspire me is the amount of the item could give a different effect of the final outcome, my partner and I will really need to considerate about what effect we want and how many tv will we need to prepare, to get the reality effect of it should we rent it, buy it or make it. The problem with renting it is there will be some damage happening during the interaction, for the buying, firstly it is time-consuming, secondly, we don't know the price range of it. So we will need to make it but to keep the quality and also really plan out the structure of how to make it stay strong and stable. Taking on this idea, it has inspired me to make an "interactional TV body" Which is a combination of three tv layers together into a small tower, the top one will be a hand made TV with a mirror instead of a screen and the other two can be borrowed from UAL. (see more in the first idea in the sketchbook)
Marina Abrmovic
Marina was one of the greatest performance artists in the world, from many of her work she consistently tested the limits of her own physical and mental endurance in her work – and invited audiences to encounter it with her.
In one of her works, she has spent 1 minute in silence with complete strangers, they're staring at each other, and in this way, the interaction was very successful as Marina was the interaction in self.
Another very famous performance art of Marina was she as the model was stood still for up to 6 hours, and in the time period people are able to do anything with her body, among the table was the object there was the object of pleasure and objects with destructions. As time passed more people are doing something that is harmful to her body, as make a cut on her neck, use the strings to attach her, made her pointing a gun at herself or taking her clothes off. In this experiment the idea of interaction is also herself, and started with no one is brave enough to go, until a unbelievable stage, so interaction start with people, with continuous and amount of people.
Venting room
"Venting room"
It is a room that I see recently that opened up in China, it is a room where you pay to go in with wearing body protections, and use hammers and bats to vent their frustration on household objects while staff plays music of their choice in the background. This is something that I found quite mad, there is a place for you to pay and express your anger, it makes me wonder will the anger get maximized and make people more aggressive in the future after experiencing the room frequently, or will customers really feel relaxed and pleased after the session.
I would like to also experience with this idea of 'madness' into my own interaction project, as seeing how many people will take a part indoor of when told you are free to express your anger and madness, and how will the place look like in the end.
Olafur Eliasson
Olafur Eliasson is a Denmark artist, who was famous at using air, temperature, and light.
Bu going to his show, most of his shows are quite interactive, in order of using light temperature and temperature. Most people were aiming for his work of using the projector and making the reflection of ourselves on the wall, in another way, it is changing the perception, we were reflected into different sizes, colors, and positions, which I found quite interactive in a simple way.

Daniel Rozin
Daniel was famous know of his Mechanical miser, which is a machine that can automatically produce your look by using that technological system, which is a very fun and unique way to present the idea of 'Mirror'. The interaction of his work is using the uniqueness and the easy form that was presented to attract people to interact, as strangers can be 'made up' like a photo or a paint that was put on the wall by just posing infant of it, which is simple, easy and playful.
Gonzales-Torrez
The process of seeing the change pf the piece when people were really involved in the piece, Torrez has created nineteen candy pieces that were featured in many museums around the world. Many of his works target HIV, a topic of a serious nature, one that is still unfortunately often taboo in mainstream society.
Roman Ondak
This is a big project that has had many people involved in, the reason people are willing to be participating is because of, the work itself has a meaning, it is simple, and everyone is doing it. the work begins as an empty white gallery. As visitors enter the room, they are invited to stand against the wall and have someone mark off their height and label it with their first name and the date of their visit.
