BODYMOVEMENT

BODY MOVEMENT IS...

Body movement is a topic or a act that seems has a broad range to me, the movement of body is very interesting and variously, the movement could be small or big, can be quick or slow, depends what do I want it to presented as. Movement first links me to dancing, walking and waving our arms, it is some action that was act 'big', big actions can more easily attract other's attention, however I found small movement can also be interesting, a blink, a smile or a nod, sometimes small things shows something even more, it could also be powerful as well. Both big and small action and movement is a way we expresser emotion, we react different movement in different places, to different people and under different conditions. To make sure my outcome fitting the theme, I will need to decide precisely of each scene and how to give the effect I want of movement.

Contextual Practice 18/11/19

From the workshop of body movement today, I was finding it harder than what I have thought of. To act infant of the classmate is not a easy thing, especially we need to think a movement that we could develop from 1 to 10, as from a simple, small action to something that is more playful and big. For our group we came up with an idea based on the song 'we will rock you' (queen), we decided to get started as using the beats instead of moving straight away, the outcome was not as quit as what we've thought of, but I believe will still be very successful if we could change the composition, and make more practice of it.

EXPERIMENTATION

Based on making a film from elements around and recording people's movements and action, and objects that is moving. From all of the videos that I've recorded I find nature combines very well with humans, so I decide this will be my starting point of the project. In order of finding things that is natural, I didi thought about flower, but others suggest that flowers is a little bit too commercial and frequently used in many ways so I will need to think of another idea in order of being natural.

EXPLORE THE NATURE

To find and feel the nature I visited Hyde park and green park to seeking some element that I could've used, the outcome shows the most natural and can be shaped in many ways is tree branches. Firstly I've thought of birds, as it is a body that usually seen in the forest, as it also travels the seeds around, but I did not find a good way to combine it with human body so I moved on to my next idea. Seeing the tree branches being putted tightly together has remind me of a Korean movie that I saw before, which is about human body and trees, as also I find trees has a similar structure and human, the branches could be cut off, shaped in to many different ways, as like we sometimes forced by the environment as who we will became, and effect the way of living.

CONCEPT AND NAME

“替” (REPLACE)

The original concept of the video is based on showing the process as making a still object/person alive, and record the detail movements as how it starts moving slightly, as breathing or shaking and moving towards fully born alive. However throughout the precess of filming another concept was given during the conversation between my model and me. When he was told what to do, how to pose, how to move and where to put the branches, he starts to feel a bit annoyed, maybe because of my communication skills is still not on a high standard, but then he said 'why are you changing how I want myself to be, I am already very happy with how I'm doing the poses.' So I wondered, if the final outcome really what he(my model) wanted, he was more happy and settled as how he originally was, but I personally added some element that doesn't fits or belongs to him and making him someone else, it is like being forced in a experiment. This reminds me of maybe many people are already very settled with how they are right now but because of sisal pressure family pressure they have to change how they use to live, even for the plants they could be living for up to maybe hundreds thousand years together in the forest, but were being forced to change and processed into different furnitures and tools. Some changes has also made after generating the concept, my original plan was to follow a card low exposure scenes and slightly turn to a bright clean scenes as from dead to alive, based on the reference I given (Sia MV/Midsommar), but then I decided to make is opposite around which to present the forcing, and the unwillingness. The title of the film I decide to call it "替“ which means "REPLACING" in English, to give it in Chinese is because it has more meanings as helping, replacing but also is when my model told me his idea was spoken in Chinese and he mentioned this Chinese character in the sentence, and I personally thought this really fits the concept and I liked the way how its pronounced.

Sarah Lucas

Lucas places familiar objects in shocking or unexpected arrangements. Many of these exploits the sexual innuendo that is a key feature of popular British comedy, from carrying On films to Viz magazine. For me, it is showing the distortion of the human body.

Seulgi Kang

Seulgi Kang’s works deal with breaking down the simplicity and complexity of the ‘every day’. She is questioning her environment, balance and power relations, the rules that for her seem to have already been granted by default. Her work reflects a wide range of emotions that correlates to surroundings (specific objects) in the ‘space’ of the individual (people).

The Safarani Sisters

Cocoon is the story of a person who turns into herself, like a butterfly forming in a cocoon. She is tangled inside her apartment—all of the shots are inside of her room. She doesn’t want to come out because she doesn’t want to contact the world around her before learning who she is through herself.

 SIA

After seeing the example of movement videos that was given, the first thing pops up in my head is  SIA's music videos. In her MV's the girl who was dancing the whole way through was so powerful that has stayed a strong image in my head all the time. Many of her MV was presented in an active way, with many poses and movements following the music, but also a control of the camera, as switching the scene, or the great uses of space to make the whole mv looking very organized. However Sia also tried many different ways as presenting the movement as a single person or as a community, which did give a very different effect to me as a audience. For example two of the most famous MV is "The greatest" and the "Chandelier", both of the videos shows a strong concept, but in "The greatest" I feel more energy, power, bravery and the never giving up the personality with another group of children together as a group. Which in "Chandelier" the character by herself acts freer, and ego, with a sense of loneliness inside. This gives me tips as the mood of the film does depend on the numbers of figures and how they were asked to act like, communicating and decision is very important throughout the whole project.

Midsommar

The movie Midsommar is based on natural environment and culture, in the movie there is a lot of element and shooting angle which I think I can try to use, the clean, white filter is something I enjoyed, and maybe it is possible to be added into my shoots. Other than the filter, there is also some culture and tradition meanings presented throughout the whole movie, and I wondered could I maybe also add some more personal or cultural, traditional meanings into my film as well.

Glass Garden

In the movie glass garden, the main character is researching a green blood cell technology, a process that would allow photosynthesis in human and thus eliminate the need for external oxygen, which she was thinking of using it to heal one of her leg and the life of the professor who died accidentally. The process is to get the element she needed from the tree and make it into some kind of serum, and inject it into the body, and she is hoping that will fix the dead cells in body.
